But don’t fear, Myers has returned with a brand new 6-track EP ‘Tea Leaves’ brimming with his signature psych-sewn raw storytelling. Traveling through six chapters of emotions and experiences: Infatuation, Remembering, Aloneness, Uncertainty, Desire, and Transformation… And similar to his previous catalog, this post-pandemic set will take the listener far into this songwriter’s awareness.

Myers’ latest blend of urgent reluctance can be heard in full, here at the GTC.

https://globaltexanchronicles.com/tea-leaves/
Ben Myers - Alternative Singer-Songwritertag:benmyersonline.com,2005:Post/70563182022-09-08T21:04:52-05:002023-06-29T19:04:09-05:00New Album "Tea Leaves" Promo Notes
1. It isn’t fully clear if all 12 tracks were conceived during the past couple of years but the vibe throughout is that of isolation, desperation, defiance and, hints of hope and renewal. So all the pieces seem to fit.

I say hope, in the most abstract way, considering the current social climate. Myers, with his knack for writing songs that act straightforward but often have moments of perceived misdirection. Kind of like remembering a dream. You can explain all you want what happened in your slumber last night, but the nuanced details are never as easy to convey as you’d hope. So, while listening to this personal album laced with psych-pop tendencies, be cognizant that Ben Myers constructs his songs in a manner that leaves interpretation on the table. The songwriter’s experiences are the backbone here, but the best route to take is to have a couple of streams and soak in, translate and make these songs your own.

What is unwavering, is that we’ve all had a rough go of it as of late and Myers writes and produces his truths about it all and this is ever evident on this LP. And you can steam this shadow poet’s ‘Bad Blood’ as well as his Top Spotify Tracks, now at the GTC.

https://globaltexanchronicles.com/bad-blood-lp/
Ben Myers - Alternative Singer-Songwritertag:benmyersonline.com,2005:Post/63327092020-05-27T20:45:19-05:002020-05-27T20:45:19-05:00Deluxe Editions
Deluxe Editions of my last 5 albums are now available in the "Members" section. They are loaded with tons of B-Sides, Demos, and Alternate Takes spanning the last 10 years. I had a lot of fun putting these together and reminiscing. I think fans will find that this is an amazing window into my songwriting process. I'm making the B-Sides available under a Creative Commons license, meaning the songs may be shared or sampled as long as credit is given. More details on that are in the "Members" section.

The Deluxe Editions are free to listen to and you may also download them for any price you choose.

No end to this darkness ALBUM: BEN MYERS – ‘The Dark Heart Age’ (LP)

by Walter Price

What’s eating at Ben Myers? His latest release, ‘ The Dark Heart Age’, is a 12-track collection moving in and out of reminiscent conversations, promises, pleas, and lovelorn sentiments. Resulting in the vibe, for the most part, lingering in the darkness, with fleeting moments of abstract positivity. A voyeuristic experience into a talented songwriter’s heartbreaking and complicated memories.

With all its beautiful piano and guitar arrangements covering a nice swathe of genres and Myers’ emotional words laying on the thick anguish, love, and longing. This album seemingly would better fit a Fall or Winter release/listen. Lest you forget, Summer has its rainy days as well.

If you’re moved by Jeff Buckley, Elliot Smith and/or Sufjan Stevens, this album will slide nicely into your downloads.
Ben Myers - Alternative Singer-Songwritertag:benmyersonline.com,2005:Post/56306762019-02-06T14:20:49-06:002019-02-06T14:20:49-06:00New Album, "The Dark Heart Age", releases March 7th
My 3 year project, "The Dark Heart Age" arrives on March 7th. She was ok with me editing as needed. - Ben

Portrait, An Invitation to the Voyage
by Linda (@ArcticMonkcul)

On October 14th Ben Myers released “Portrait”, an album mostly based on the concepts of love and underlying commitment. The lyrics of “Portrait” address everyone yet creates a personal experience for the listener. Ben’s message of love to his muse is so strong throughout that we can’t help but wonder who it might be. In Portrait love is everywhere. Love surrounds us.

“It’s been a while, since I last wrote a song for you.
"Ben Myers Daylight Moon album is the latest in a remarkable run of creativity which saw the talented singer-songwriter write seven albums in four years. Prolific or what? Over the twelve songs on Daylight Moon, Ben shows that his song writing is on an upward curve as he produces acoustic ballads with melodies that would be the envy of any of his contemporaries.

... It’s quite easy to see that Ben is interested in the song writing process with influences from The Beatles to Elvis Costello apparent in his work. More obvious comparisons in mood and tempo have been made to Elliott Smith but given the quality of such artists, this is no bad thing.

Ben Myers has a seemingly effortless knack of producing intelligent, thoughtful acoustic music with roots in pop and folk in equal measures. All of the songs on Daylight Moon have a great melody that is, in-part well planned but also something instinctive that no amount of practice can generate. You’ve either got it or you haven’t and on Daylight Moon, Ben Myers proves beyond any doubt that he’s got it in abundance."

Good night Ben, Where do you get your inspiration from?

Dreams, memories, and feelings. I seem to have a wide range of emotions which follow me around... things that I've tried to ignore... but I end up diving head-first into these feelings. There's certainly a lot of anger and frustration present in my songs, but more than that it's the release that comes from freeing yourself of that anger, like finding spiritual enlightenment and rising above it all. Sex, beauty, and beautiful women are a huge influence on me as well, and not in a shallow way. There's something incredibly mystifying about women, and it usually comes from the ones that don't realize how mysterious they are.

Could you please name your musical influences?

There are so many... really way too many. All the greats. Some artists I currently connect to are David Bowie, New Order, The Smiths, Kate Bush, Neil Young, Elvis Costello, Elliott Smith, and I'm also a huge Beatles fan, mostly John Lennon.

Do you have some future projects?

Yes, I'm currently recording a new album and I hope to have it done by the end of the summer. I've got 17 new songs demo'ed and a few recorded already. The album is going to be mostly acoustic guitar and piano with some percussive shakers and tambourine. The album sounds a lot darker than Daylight Moon. I think I've been in a good place personally and in my relationship to where I can express some hurts from years ago. Where Daylight Moon felt very dreamlike, this one feels much more real. It's a bit intimidating to follow up my last album because I always try to raise the bar higher. Hopefully I can achieve that here.

Will you be touring soon?

I haven't played a show in over a year and a half. I love performing, but I've been very disenchanted with the music scene in my area. People get more interested in what social circle your run with rather than the quality of your music. I've always been a loner. I think the best musicians are quiet people. I've watched too many good bands die out around here from social pressures. That being said, if I can get the money together, I'd like to tour in the region when I finish my next album.

Would you like to visit Mexico, and what have you heard about mexican audience?

Mexico looks absolutely beautiful and I would love to go! Some of my style tries to imitate a spanish/latin sound. It's such an intimate way of playing that I can only wonder at the sensuousness of the country. I'm sure the audiences would be great.

Please tell us about a song that means a lot to you, and why?

About 12 years ago I wrote and recorded a song to my Grandma shortly before she passed away of old age. The song was called "New Morning". It was a song about memories and cleansing your spirit. I've always thought it reminded me of "Do You Realize" by the Flaming Lips. No one on her side of the family was musical, and I think it puzzled everyone when I dropped out of college to make music. She really loved the song though!

We thank to Ben Myers for giving us the oportunity to listen to his music and his time! Don't forget to listen to his work and remember if you like it, let him know, he's really a nice guy.

"For fans of Five for Fighting, Rivers Cuomo, James Harries and Ben Folds as I am there is a singer-songwriter out of Lawrence, KS named Ben Myers. Myers is crafting intelligent dreamy at times hushed folk derived pop sounds that move in advanced and tactile queries of everyday life.

The difference with this songwriter are his approaches;Daylight Moon has personalized ways of utilizing pop, rock, folk flavors and hints of 60’s psych to convey mature but yet unique flirting perspectives on the ordinary. I talked of my early musical influences as well as the influence of dreams in my songs. Nothing really transpired from our exchanges so I thought some of you might find it interesting…

On my musical beginnings:

I’ve been interested in music for as far back as I can remember. There’s a cool picture of me as a toddler listening intently with large headphones on. My parents had an old beat-up guitar I used to pretend with when I was old enough to walk. I had other toy instruments around, like bongos and such as a kid. My grandma had an upright piano I used to play on all the time when we visited. I’ve always been playing and listening to music. I’ve never had music lessons but would try to play songs by ear. It wasn’t until high school that my friends started showing me guitar chords. I remember guitar was a challenge to learn, much more so than the piano.

I think what got me into music was how I could escape and make-believe with it. I remember thinking Michael J. Fox playing “Johhny B. Goode” was one of the coolest things ever! I used to jump around with a toy guitar and pretend I could play it. My parents also had pretty good taste in music and I remember listening to a lot of Elton John, Queen, Madonna, Creedence Clearwater, and, of course, Michael Jackson. I also listened to a good amount of classical piano music as a kid too.

I started writing classical style instrumental songs on the piano in my early teens. Later, in High-School, I was trying to write rock songs on the guitar. I was so jealous of my friends in rock bands. They were nice enough to let me tag along. That’s where I picked up those early chords.

On the influence of dreams in my songwriting:

Yeah, I think my subconscious has always been present in my songwriting, but as I got older I just became more aware of it. I think the nature of songs are so mysterious. They don’t take on any physical form but are only alive in the mind. I enjoy trying to tap into other people’s subconscious with the use of symbols, feelings, and imagery. I’d rather that a song not make literal sense. I think it’s good to leave interpretation open-ended. I’m really into multiple meanings of lyrics. Using dream imagery, I think, helps me tap into that shared ancient human experience.

On other artists’ musical mystery:

Well, Bob Dylan is known for his “stream of consciousness” style of writing, which I think also translates into “stream of subconsciousness” in a lot of ways. Nick Drake’s magnificent and foreboding album “Pink Moon” has been described as a “fever dream”. Pink Floyd deals a lot with the idea of “self” and sanity. I also think John Lennon was a visionary of the dream culture. His song’s “Imagine” and “#9 Dream” are obvious examples. These artists knew how to find a common thread that people could connect to on a deep level. Some of this also has to do with your mental state and/or what drugs you take.

On using dreams as a muse:

I have a pretty extensive dream journal, and yeah, there are some recurring themes there. A lot where I’m fighting evil forces with other people. I dream in wildly imaginative, and fantastic introspection. There’s a website called “Dream Moods” which I consult a lot for meaning. They’re pretty spot-on.

As anyone who dreams knows, you can wake from one in a pretty affected state of mind. Most of the time I would play off these intense emotions and try to translate them into a song. It’s all just feelings, and when my waking (sometimes boring) life wasn’t giving me enough to move on, I’d try to use these dream feelings.

Thanks for reading. Feel free to email me below if you wish to ask me a question. Maybe in the future I can post an interview with your submitted questions.
